Folley Cottage
Extension and deep retrofit · Dedham Vale AONB, Suffolk · Non-designated heritage asset
A tiny flint cottage in the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, overlooking the Stour Valley. The cottage is not listed but is recognised as a non-designated heritage asset.
The upper floor was reached by little more than a ladder. A small extension now contains the dining table and a new staircase rising to two bedrooms and a bathroom, transforming how the whole house works and connecting it to the garden and views.
The cottage was deeply retrofitted. Breathable wood-fibre internal insulation protects the knapped flint walls from moisture and condensation, and the old oil heating is gone, warmth is now provided by a ground source heat pump.
