About
I’m an architect working with homeowners on their houses: retrofitting, extending and transforming existing buildings, and occasionally building something new.
Much of my work is with listed and historic buildings, and homes in Conservation Areas and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. I enjoy unlocking the puzzles offered by old structures and their later additions: reading what’s there, drawing attention to small existing details, and responding with an appropriate palette of natural materials. I take a fabric-first, low-energy approach, so the homes I work on are warm, comfortable and economical to run, as well as beautiful. My own house, A-Typical Terrace, is a deep retrofit that I monitor closely, so I can see how these decisions perform in practice.
Digital fabrication is the other thread to my work. I design for CNC fabrication and prototype on my own machine, working with specialist fabricators on larger pieces. This makes precise, bespoke timber structures and joinery possible, such as staircases, porches, roofs and furniture, that would be unaffordable to make entirely by hand.
I keep the practice deliberately small. You work with me directly from first sketch to completion, supported by a trusted team of engineers, makers and builders.
